Safety & Disclosures
Beta, pre-release. The NinjaTrader MCP server and its trading skills are in beta and aren’t yet generally available. The beta runs on Demo only, which trades simulated money. Live access opens later. Server hostnames, the tool set, the skills, and the onboarding flow may change before launch.
Connecting an AI agent to your NinjaTrader account lets it trade on your behalf. That’s powerful, and it carries real risk. Read this page before connecting a Live account.
You’re in control
You are ultimately responsible for every order placed in your account, including those an AI agent places for you. When you connect an agent, all trading decisions are yours.
- Review what the agent is about to do. Depending on your AI client’s settings, the agent may ask for approval before each action, or it may act without confirmation if you’ve configured it to. Know which mode you’re in.
- Set your client to require approval for actions while you’re getting started. The MCP server marks six of the seven write tools—
place_order,modify_order,cancel_order,close_position,update_risk_settings, anddismiss_alert—with the MCP protocol’s destructive-action flag, and most clients can pause for confirmation on those.create_alertis a write tool too, but it carries a non-destructive, idempotent hint, so your client may not prompt before it runs. See Tools. - You can disconnect at any time. Removing the MCP server from your client immediately ends the agent’s ability to act.
What the agent can and can’t do
A connected agent can only do what the tools allow, within your account’s permissions. It authenticates as you, so treat it like a signed-in session.
- It can read your accounts, positions, orders, balances, and history, and, with the right permissions, place and manage orders, change risk settings, and create alerts.
- It can’t do anything the tools don’t expose: it can’t move funds, change your login credentials, or reach the other environment—a Demo connection can’t access Live, and vice versa.
AI agents can make mistakes
AI agents can misinterpret instructions, act on incomplete or outdated information, and behave in unexpected ways. They may place orders you didn’t intend, size them wrong, or act on a stale quote.
NinjaTrader doesn’t control, and can’t guarantee, the behavior of third-party AI agents or the accuracy of their output. Validate the agent’s intent before authorizing actions, and monitor your account while an agent stays connected.
Your data and third-party AI providers
When you connect an agent, the AI client and its provider receive the account data the agent reads, including account identifiers, positions, balances, orders, and transaction history. The AI provider handles that data under their terms and privacy policy, which NinjaTrader doesn’t control.
Only connect AI clients you trust, and review the provider’s data-handling terms before connecting a Live account.
Trading risk
Trading futures and event contracts involves substantial risk of loss and isn’t suitable for every investor. Futures use leverage, so losses can exceed your initial deposit. Automated or agent-driven strategies can move quickly and may be difficult to monitor or stop in real time, and may perform poorly in certain market conditions.
Every order the agent places must first clear the account’s pre-trade risk checks: the same margin, permission, and position-limit checks that apply to orders you place yourself.
Accounts that fall below health criteria may be auto-liquidated. Keep account-level risk settings in place, including daily and weekly loss limits, trailing max drawdown, and auto-liquidation thresholds. They apply to orders placed through the MCP server just as they do elsewhere. See the liquidation policy for details.
Reduce your risk
A practical checklist before and while you use an agent:
- Start on Demo. Learn how your agent behaves against simulated money first.
- Set connection risk limits when you approve the connection: caps on total exposure and per-session volume that bind only this agent, checked on every opening order.
- Require approval for write actions in your client until you trust the setup.
- Trade small when you move to Live.
- Keep risk limits in place with
update_risk_settings. Loss limits and auto-liquidation thresholds are your backstop. - Monitor account activity in the trader app; don’t rely on the agent alone.
- Disconnect the server when you’re done.
